British food in the US

I noticed a lot of Brits trying to find some of the foods they miss from back home. I'm not a Brit, but I'm married to one. We are very fortunate, in that we live near a place that sells a nice variety of the British groceries, www.goodwoods.com . They are in Texas just north of Houston. (We visit so often, that we've become friends with the owners). And yes, many of the local stores carry a small variety of the British foods now. But my husband and I have decided we would rather support the British owned and operated business.

Even so, there are some things that are not sold in the local stores that Goodwood's British Market sells, like: Back Bacon, British style sausages, meat pies and pasties, black and white pudding, sausage rolls, Aunt Bessie's yorkshire puddings, already premade. And pork pies to die for. As an American, I never thought I would like Pork Pies. But when I tasted one of these, with the gelatin around the pork and a layer of stilton on top, I was sold. Luckily, my husband stopped me just in time. I was about to pop it in the oven to heat it up. He said it would have made a mess of the pie because all the gelatin would have melted.

It's nice that it's close by and we don't have to pay for shipping frozen food two day express deliver. But I have ordered on many occasions, a box of mixed frozen products to be shipped to my in-laws in PA. The shipping was more than you would pay for ground shipping, granted. But my husband and I felt it was well worth it - to give them a special treat once in a while. Just like my husband, they love all the American food.

I researched other British shops that ship meat products. I found that Goodwood's used dry ice and a syrofoam cooler, so that it arrived to their door frozen. This was good for them. They are older and don't really eat as much. But because it arrives frozen, they feel safe about putting into their freezer to defrost at a latter date. I just wouldn't feel safe sending them meat products chilled with gel packs. Unless it arrives frozen, it's not really safe to refreeze.

I'm really happy with Goodwood's service. So for those of you occasionally craving some back bacon or meat pies, etc. - I would highly recommend you try www.goodwoods.com
